Meet a Re-Imagineer: Judy Samuels on Launching a New Business in Midlife

You were a married working mom, then a stay-at-home mom of three. But then you went to your local YMCA. What happened?

In the early years, I balanced motherhood and work and eventually became a full-time stay-at-home mom to my three children. But movement and teaching were always part of my life—I taught creative movement to preschoolers in Westport and led adult fitness classes like step aerobics and kickboxing. My local YMCA was my second home–a natural extension of everything I loved. I joined the staff 25 years ago and never turned back. I continued expanding my skills, adding personal training and other fitness modalities over the years. The Y fuels my passion for fitness and community wellness.

As your kids got older, you took a job selling advertising for a startup parent magazine. How long were you there before launching Get Going Fitness LLC—and what sparked that idea?

In 2008, I was asked to help launch Fairfield Parent magazine as part of Davler Media Group. It was an exciting opportunity to support local businesses and connect with families. That same year, I also launched Get Going Fitness LLC and built my website—so yes, it was a very busy time! The idea came from seeing how much people valued personalized attention in their fitness journeys. I wanted to create a space where individuals, especially older adults, could feel supported, challenged, and empowered through one-on-one training tailored to their needs.  I worked part-time selling advertising for 8years until the magazine merged with a competing magazine.

How has the business evolved? Tell us about “Senior Strong” and the other programs you oversee.

Get Going Fitness is now my own one-on-one personal training business focused on helping clients build strength, confidence, and mobility at any stage of life.

At the YMCA, I oversee our Healthy Living programs—an umbrella of initiatives designed to support physical and emotional well-being across all stages of life. One of our cornerstone offerings is Senior Strong, a functional movement fitness class that I created.  It is tailored for adults 65 and up, working on building strength, endurance, balance, and mobility.  We also run specialized programs like Parkinson’s Boxing and Conditioning, which focuses on boxing and strength, balance, community, and empowerment for those living with Parkinson’s disease, and the YMCA Live Strong cancer recovery program, which provides a safe, supportive environment for survivors to rebuild strength and confidence.

In addition to my work at the Y, I also teach two mornings a week at our town’s Senior Center, continuing to support older adults through personalized wellness and fitness programming. Across all these spaces, the mission is the same: to help people move better, feel stronger, and stay connected to their health and their community.
